Plant theft is a scourge to the Rental Industry, it happens every day and it steals everyones already thin, profit margins. The hassle, downtime, cross-hiring and increased insurance premiums that comes with plant theft, make doing business very tough.

Over the years I have used many different security systems all of which promised to do the same thing – recovery the machine after it was stolen. According to JCB statistics published in January 2011 - 92% of plant stolen is never recovered.

It is now over two years ago since M O'Brien Plant Hire started fitting the Kosran ECV Diesel Immobilisation System to our extensive fleet which now includes a complete range of secured Hitachi Excavators from the 3 tonne ZX30 – to the Hitachi 45 tonne EX455 – not one of which has been stolen. The Kosran ECV System is a superb anti-theft system and it is specifically designed for the hostile construction equipment plant environment.

Plant thieves are professionals, they steal our machines for money or to order for export but the Kosran Immobiliser is too much of a deterrent and challenge for them, it requires too much expertise, parts, takes too much time - it is a great system, a great deterrent.

Our customers already specify Kosran when hiring from us and I forecast that Kosran will be the UK industry standard specified by Contractors within the next two years and the sooner OEM Manufactuers supply it on machines from the factory, then our industry can move on from plant theft.

In 2010, M O'Brien Plant Hire were introduced to the New ECV Comms Keypad System. One of the many benefits of this immobilisation tracking system is, much improved utilisation from remote control access to the Keypad PIN Codes and to your fleet – we can rent the nearest machine to the next job - not the furthest one away. Improved utilisation means the system pays for itself over a shorter period of time.
